Tom Plant, Director of the Governor’s Energy Office (GEO), spoke on behalf of Governor Bill Ritter on Sunday at a press conference before the Freewheelin VIP Ride.

“Thank you to all of you from the Governor,” said Plant, “he’s with us in spirit.”

Plant spoke with humorous candor about Ritter’s affection for bicycling: “The governor is an incredibly strong supporter of bicycling in the state of Colorado. He’s an avid cyclist himself–he gets up at 5:30 in the morning and rides his bike–it’s his way of keeping sane as a governor.”

After acknowledging Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper’s commitment to addressing the challenges of bicycle commuting , Plant concluded his remarks with more crowd-pleasing commentary: “At 9:30 on Thursday night when I-25 is closed down, it’s going to be the bicyclists who are smiling.”
