Alejandro Albor has his hands full. He has a wife and three children. He owns a growing business, A-WON Handcycles, which builds custom rigs for low income consumers. He’s a key focal point in an upcoming Vanilla Fire Productions documentary narrated by Dan Akroyd. And he’s an Olympic medalist, winning Athens silver in 2004.
The hitch? Albor has no legs. Struggling with depression, Albor drove himself into a train in 1993. He has since become a model for personal transformation, speaking to groups about the challenges he’s overcome. In a press release from this June, just before winning the U.S. Handcycling Road National Championships, Albor said “I want to set an example to let others know that no matter where you come from, or what you have gone through, if you have the determination, you can make your dreams come true.”
Albor hopes to turn his silver into gold when the Paralympic Games kick off in Beijing next week, September 6-17.
