YouTube listens to Mr. Know-It-All

In my Mr. Know-It-All social media series, I proposed that television and movie sites like Hulu.com posed a serious threat to YouTube‘s online video marketshare.

Sure enough, roughly a week later, YouTube unveiled new channels for Television Shows and Movies owned by Sony.

YouTube is featuring classic television shows like the original Addam’s Family, T.J. Hooker, and Married with Children. It’s a remarkably smart move by YouTube and Sony—instead of confronting Hulu’s major network muscle directly, YouTube offers thousands of different options instead.

Providing full length authorized video will help improve their bootleg image—and allow them the opportunity to crack down on bad user behavior without damaging their diverse selection of titles.

Most importantly, opening the doors to authorized content puts YouTube in a position to become a powerful distribution network for independent television and film-makers of the future.

Sometimes it feels good to be so right. ;-)
