A quick update on the color situation: it’s getting there! The background you can see today is “tofu cream,” which is vaguely derived from this photo I found on Flickr of Tofu Man:
And I’ve found a happy triadic color scheme that includes a green and what I envision as rust. If you though triadic was either A) a period of time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth or B) a technical term for a menage a trois, perhaps you should watch this moderately sleepy but nonetheless informative video tutorial about color theory. You can also visit ColorSchemeDesigner.com and start playing around, which is what I like to do.
So, based on current votes, here’s a rough color palette with which I will work for the rest of the month:
Today we’re talking about fonts. Look, I know you’re on a computer, and odds are very good that you’re a blogger, so I’m not going to bang your head against some obnoxiously boring theory about font types. Here’s what you need to know:
- While modern websites and browsers can render almost any font, there is a limited list of fonts that are friendly to all web browsers. Call me old-fashioned or paranoid, but I only design with these web-friendly fonts (unless you wave money in my face and call me an old-fashioned, paranoid chicken).
- Serifs are the little whoopdeedoos that make some fonts look fancier than others. Sans serif means, well, “without whoopdeedoos.”
- Based on research, Tahoma is the most legible font for screen media.
- Georgia is quite possibly my favorite serifed font for screens.
- Comic Sans is the butt of every web designer’s joke.
To make the selection process easier, I’ve narrowed the choices a little:
- This is Arial.
- This is Arial Black.
- This is Verdana.
- This is Times New Roman.
- This is Georgia.
- This is Courier.
- This is Lucida Console.
If none of the above are blowing your skirt up, feel free to browse the complete list of font options here and write in your favorites!
TOMORROW: Do you love your iPhone more than your mother?

If I hung around your site, I would definitely learn alot.
PS. I really hope most people say they love their mom more than their iPhone, but I know my son would be hard pressed if he were asked that question. Well, actually, no. I think he loves his iPad even more than his iPhone.
Well, Alexandra, there’s no one saying you CAN’T hang around, wink nudge.
You should read my story at Psychology Today, then ask you son if he thinks it’s true love or just pigeon pecking: http://bit.ly/bzNEuJ
